What kind of culture influences through technology can you see from today’s world?

Presently, people used to spend more time on computer. People tend to stay at home playing computer games or read articles from the internet rather than going out to library, exercise or joining society works. The spreading of new technologies make our life easier but of course it influences our social organization. We relied on technology to communicate with others and by that means, we are live in our own world. For instance, previous time, we can see children enjoys playing football anywhere even though there's no field to play, they will play on the street but nowadays, we barely found that. It is easier to find children going to cybercafe to play online games instead of seeing then at the field. In this case our healthy life has gone and exchange with a new culture.

Is there a possibility to reshape the (new) culture today via new technology, How?

From my perspective as a teenager, teenagers mostly influenced by the new coming technologies such as PSP, IPod, IPhone and etc. If we want to reshape our culture today, we have to depends on technology because all of us are attracted to new things. I guess, with the technology that we have, we can easily get access to internet and therefore, we should read more stories or articles and improves our general and specialize knowledge than previous time when internet hadn't exist. Thus, the technology develops our culture on reading and knowledge which led us to become a knowledgeable people and worldly. Hence, the habits of reading can be sprang up as our culture.

Personal reflection

This is last topic for this trimester and personally I discovered, I like to have this kind of tutorial sessions via internet rather than going to class and sit there waiting for answers from friends and lecturers. Good job to my lecturers Mr Radzi Bedu and Mdm Helena Song Sook Yee for guiding and making us better from day to day. I'll be really missed the Media Culture class and once again Thank you very much.

Media Imperialism can be defined as "one big giant company has power on other small companies and they can give orders before it is going to be issued.

Critical Reflection 1

We can relate Media Imperialism with what's happening in Gaza as the powerful nation such as United States keeps telling us and used their power of media to penetrate people's mind. They spread falsity news to the whole world in order to appropriate their actions or to grant their actions.

Critical Reflection 2

I believe, those who have power will definitely control the media. For example, every governments in this world have political power and by all means they used it to spread their own agenda in order to strengthen their place or position as a ruling party. If the media published the badness of the government side, most probably the media station will be warned or the license will be terminated.

Personal Reflection

I'm pretty happy this week since my complained last week has been taken seriously by lecturer Mdm Helena Song Sook Yee. I asked her to upload notes 2-3days before the class begins and she acted on it. Thank you.

Critical Reflection 1
Essentially, IM does affect our lives in term of communication. These days, people tend to sit at home and do their works through IM or email and thus they are not interacting with people. This will affects their social skills and therefore they are actually isolating themselves in their home or workspace.

Critical Reflection 2

Most of students spend time interacting with others using Instant Messaging. This won't make them better in life. They need to communicate in real life. As a human beings we actually need to interact face to face with others. When we talk with others in real life or real space, we tend to have better overall emotional interaction and understanding to each other compared to communicate through IM which the person or the receiver cannot understand the tone of mood, facial features and also the body language. Thus this will not make our social life more snappy and lively. Of course IM has made our life easier than before but at the same time, we still need to interact with people in real situation as a humanity.

Personal Reflection.

I find the topic given for this week is interesting since this topic is related to my daily life. I have nothing to be disgruntled since our MLC lecturers had done a good job and delivered a very clear content. Just one thing you guys need to look at, Please kindly upload notes 3-4 days before the class begins. I want to have better understanding before going to class.

Let's see this scary lame short movie regarding to Instant Messaging. It affects our sleeping time!!!

From the Oxford dictionary thesaurus, Obscenity means something dealing with sexual matters in an offensive way; pornography means writing or pictures intended to stimulate erotic feelings by portraying sexual activity and indecency means offending against standards of decency; inappropriate.

Obscenity and indecency are synonyms. However, indecency is a slight milder than obscenity. Indecency can be elaborated as unconventional and it does not necessarily mean insulting or gross but obscenity does, it is something gross and abusive. Obscenity should be differentiate with pornography because it has different meaning. Pornography is more on sexual activity in literature, films, etc to stimulate erotic sensation rather than emotional feelings. So basically pornography is based on pictures, writings, and also videos.

There was no lecture class for this week. Thus there is nothing much to comment about what I had learn in class. I enjoyed every classes. But if possible please upload notes 1 week before the lecture session. By doing this, students can read through and get some ideas before going to class.

These are the examples of indecency include George
Carlin's famous "Seven Dirty Words" monologues, at least some
portions of Howard Stern's radio broadcasts, and, according to one
court, the text of Allen Ginsberg's "Howl"). source http://cu-digest.org/cda/mike

The concept of "indecency" was first legitimized in a case called
FCC v. Pacifica Foundation, and it concerned whether a radio
station could be fined for airing one of George Carlin's dirty-word
monologues. (source http://cu-digest.org/cda/mike)

Media literacy is something that consists of 4 elements which are analyzing, evaluating, accessing and creating messages in many forms. From analyzing critically we can generate a new idea which and sharpen our thinking skills. For instance, if we have something in mind about what's lies behind the scene and also the content of the media. From there we can generate new ideas and can improve the message to the audience so that people are more alert about the current situation.

It is very important for FCM student to understand and practicing the elements in media literacy. Some of us may be a producer in the future thus we should get to know what we should have to produce a message that can help people to get clear picture about certain things or create propaganda, censorship and also public affairs. By learning this, we definitely improve our thinking skills which can lead us to produce a good media.

I attached a video about media literacy to get a better understanding.

Media Stereotype

The Oxford Dictionary defines stereotype as conventional, standard, formulaic and hackneyed.

Media Stereotype is about conditioning people's thought on something which can be good and bad. This occurs when we characterize someone's behaviors or something towards a set image or portion.

These are some examples of media stereotype. When people say muslims are terorist, Black, drink milo and you will become stronger, and etc.

Do you often take what is on the Internet as truth without thinking much about it?

Today, information is very easy to get through Internet. For me, I don't really take what is on the internet as truth without thinking much about it. Yes, there are a lot of information can be find on Internet but are they credible enough? Anyone from this planet can create a professional looks website/weblog. The website may impress us but we shouldn't trust easily. We need to find who's the author, is he/she has credibility to write something on that area.

We should know what kind of information do we need. Are we going to find factual ideas, opinions or statistics? or are you searching for a new idea?

Media culture class has assists me to think, ponder and reflect about what is media about. For instance, this week I have been given this topic to discuss and it has made me more alert about what type of information and sources can be trusted.

Herewith I attached some tips that can help us to determine what type of sources can be relied. I found this tips from this website :

http://www.virtualsalt.com/evalu8it.htm

Source Selection Tip:

Try to select sources that offer as much of the following information as possible:
Author's Name
Author's Title or Position
Author's Organizational Affiliation
Date of Page Creation or Version
Author's Contact Information
Some of the Indicators of Information Quality (listed below)

What we need for information quality

Credibility

Because people have always made important decisions based on information, evidence of authenticity and reliability--or credibility, believability--has always been important. If you read an article saying that the area where you live will experience a major earthquake in the next six months, it is important that you should know whether or not to believe the information. Some questions you might ask would include, What about this source makes it believable (or not)? How does this source know this information? Why should I believe this source over another? As you can see, the key to credibility is the question of trust.

There are several tests you can apply to a source to help you judge how credible and useful it will be:

Author's Credentials

The author or source of the information should show some evidence of being knowledgeable, reliable, and truthful. Here are some clues:

  • Author's education, training, and/or experience in a field relevant to the information. Look for biographical information, the author's title or position of employment
  • Author provides contact information (email or snail mail address, phone number)
  • Organizational authorship from a known and respected organization (corporate, governmental, or non-profit)
  • Author's reputation or standing among peers.
  • Author's position (job function, title)

Evidence of Quality Control

Most scholarly journal articles pass through a peer review process, whereby several readers must examine and approve content before it is published. Statements issued in the name of an organization have almost always been seen and approved by several people. (But note the difference between, "Allan Thornton, employee of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency, says that a new ice age is near," and "The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Agency said today that a new ice age is near." The employee is speaking for himself, whereas a statement in the name of NOAA represents the official position of NOAA.)

Evidence of quality control of Internet material includes these items:

  • Information presented on organizational web sites
  • On-line journals that use refereeing (peer review) by editors or others
  • Postings of information taken from books or journals that have a quality control process

Metainformation

Metainformation is information about information. Information workers (sometimes called knowledge workers) all over the world are constantly poring over, processing, and evaluating information--and making notes. As the challenges produced by the increasing quantity of information continue, access to high quality metainformation will become increasingly important. Metainformation can take many forms, but there are two basic types, summary and evaluative.

Summary metainformation includes all the shortened forms of information, such as abstracts, content summaries, or even tables of contents. This type of metainformation gives us a quick glance at what a work is about and allows us to consider many different sources without having to go through them completely.

Evaluative metainformation includes all the types that provide some judgment or analysis of content. This type includes recommendations, ratings, reviews, and commentaries. Even the search results order of pages from a search engine like Google represents a type of evaluative metainformation, since pages are ranked in part by the number of other pages linked to them (and hence "voting" for them in some sense).

And, of course, these two types can be combined, resulting in the best form of metainformation, providing us with a quick overview and some evaluation of the value. An examples would be a World Wide Web yellow pages or directory which describes each selected site and provides evaluations of its content.

Indicators of Lack of Credibility

You can sometimes tell by the tone, style, or competence of the writing whether or not the information is suspect. Here are a few clues:

  • Anonymity
  • Lack of Quality Control
  • Negative Metainformation. If all the reviews are critical, be careful.
  • Bad grammar or misspelled words. Most educated people use grammar fairly well and check their work for spelling errors. An occasional split infinitive or comma in the wrong place is not unusual, but more than two or three spelling or grammar errors is cause for caution, at least. Whether the errors come from carelessness or ignorance, neither puts the information or the writer in a favorable light.

From my understanding, social media is about communication amongst people through any media which can make people communicate. Facebook, myspace, forum and etc are some of the examples of social media. the traditional social media includes newspapers, magazines and also television which also can let people interact and put their thoughts.

Naturally its affect our life and also lives around us. This media highly give impact on our daily life. For example, if someone wants to buy foodstuff, she might think twice which supermarket offers better price and of course she will talks with friends and then she will decide which supermarket to go. This is what we called as social media. Advertisements made by certain supermarket may affected her choice of buying things and probably influenced by friends through phone calling or they discussed through facebook.More or less, social media is about what people say and their perceptions after tried out certain things and then they make a judgment.

Social media is identical involved in business. Its all about customers feedback about their products. If the feedback was bad, trouble is waiting for the company. It's because, the customer will tell their friends and friends will continue telling a bad story from mouth to mouth and that's what the real thing happen now. So social media play a very important role in our lives and also personal life. its can blackmail you anytime and its also can make u on top of the world.

Personaly i feel it's good to have social media since it can lead us to a better way of life and also guide us to make a wise decisions/selections. It makes my life more lively and cheerful.

I attached a video about web2.0. How it affects us in marketing.

I purposely created this blog for my research on Media Culture area.
